Decking Dream to Reality: Kick Off Your Project

Decking Dream to Reality: Kick Off Your Project

Your Outdoor Oasis Starts Here!

A timber deck extends a home's living area, creating a versatile space for relaxation, entertainment, and enjoying the outdoors. Using durable and beautiful Australian hardwoods from LB Timber—such as Ironbark, Blackbutt, Spotted Gum, or Tallowwood—can result in a stunning and long-lasting addition to any backyard. This guide outlines the essential phases for planning and constructing a timber deck.

Planning Your Ideal Deck

Thorough planning is the foundation of a successful decking project. Key considerations include the deck's intended use, which will influence its size and layout, and how it complements the home's architectural style and available space. The choice of timber is also crucial. Ironbark offers supreme durability and fire resistance (up to BAL-40 ); Blackbutt is known for good fire resistance (BAL-29 ) and attractive pale colouring; Spotted Gum is popular for its beautiful grain and BAL-29 rating ; and Tallowwood excels in moisture-prone areas (BAL-19 ).

Safety aspects, such as Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) compliance (AS 3959 ) if in a designated area, and termite resistance (our hardwoods offer natural heartwood resistance ), must be addressed. Always check with the local council regarding permit requirements before commencing construction.

Preparing for Construction

Proper site and substructure preparation are vital. The site should be cleared, levelled, and provide good drainage away from the house. For low-level decks, a weed control membrane is advisable. The substructure, typically built from treated pine (H3/H4 grade ), consists of footings, posts set in concrete, bearers, and joists (usually spaced at a maximum of 450mm centres ).

Adequate ventilation underneath the deck is critical to prevent moisture buildup and prolong the deck's life. A minimum ground clearance of 300-400mm is generally recommended to allow free airflow.

Installing the Decking Boards

When laying the deck boards, maintain a consistent gap of 3-5mm between them for drainage and timber movement. Use high-quality, corrosion-resistant fasteners (stainless steel is recommended for hardwoods), and always pre-drill pilot holes in hardwoods to prevent splitting. Stagger the end joints of boards for better structural integrity and appearance. Consider a "picture frame" border for a neat finish. If steps are required, ensure they are sturdy, safe, and comply with building codes.

Finishing and Maintaining Your Deck

Once installed, clean the deck surface thoroughly. Applying a quality decking oil or stain will protect the timber and enhance its appearance. Water-based finishes dry faster with lower VOCs, while oil-based penetrating finishes offer a traditional rich look. Apply according to manufacturer instructions, typically two coats, ensuring all cut ends are sealed.

Regular maintenance, including cleaning and periodic re-coating (every 6 months to 3+ years, depending on exposure and finish ), will keep the hardwood deck looking its best. Regular inspections for any issues should also be part of the care routine.
